What is Level of Detail (LOD)?

In 3D visualization, Level of Detail (LOD) is a technique that allows different levels of detail to be shown for an object, depending on how close the viewer is to it. This can be used to improve performance by only rendering the most detailed version of an object when it is close up, and using less detailed versions when the object is further away.

LOD can also be used to create a more realistic sense of depth in a scene. By using different levels of detail for objects at different distances, it can give the impression that distant objects are smaller and less detailed than those closer up.
